2022 Château Pichon Longueville Baron, 2ème Cru Classé Pauillac

This year’s Pichon-Baron consists of 81% Cabernet Sauvignon and 19% Merlot, ageing 70% in new oak, the balance being in one-year-old barrels. “Focussing on keeping freshness and finesse was key in 2022,” said Pierre Montégut, who is in his first year as technical director here, following the retirement of Jean-René Matignon. He added “We took care not to extract too much – our priority was to preserve elegance, and not make too powerful a wine.” In colour, the wine is very rich and deep, aromas being distinguished and ripely aromatic. Palate is full, deep and unctuously textured, having tightly-woven, mineral fruitiness, velvety tannins and harmonious, outstanding length. We strongly recommend this great Pichon Baron, for mid- and long-term keeping (for drinking 2032-2055+).
