Ten years on from our first vintage from Jean-Claude Marsanne, this 2020 is perhaps the best we have ever tasted. Here is an action-packed, super-fine Sant-Joseph where everything is perfectly proportioned. Deep ruby purple colour, the nose is richly concentrated with precise notes of floral black cherry and liquorice. Palate is full, luscious and has super concentration. There is density, good structure and depth, with a line of freshness throughout, the finish being long, silky and satisfying (for drinking 2023-2030+).

Jean-Claude Marsanne lives and works in Mauves in the southern part of the Saint-Joseph appellation. The first vintage we shipped from his family Domaine was the 2010, and his brilliant, age-worthy Saint-Joseph has become a firm HH&C favourite. His vineyards are on slopes that are, in effect, a continuation of the hill of Hermitage, but on the opposite bank of the Rhône. With most of the wine maturing in old oak demi-muids, the remainder in tank, Jean-Claude’s focus is on allowing the terroir and vintage character to shine.
