This vibrant, organic Barbera aged for six months in a mixture of stainless steel and large, old Slavonian oak vats, to give a wine that has juicy fruit and rounded, velvety textures. Mid ruby-purple in the glass, aromas are pure and attractive, recalling blackberry, black cherry and violet. Palate is full and fleshy, having good concentration of middle fruit and a fresh finish.
“The 2022 Cascina Alberta Barbera d’Alba from the Guermani brothers in Piedmont, north-west Italy, is soft, juicy with gentle tannins, lively acidity and buckets of ripe raspberry/cherry fruit. I might drink far too much wine, but I don’t drink enough Italian wine and this has prompted me to ensure that I do.”

Brothers Francesco and Luca Guermani run this beautiful, Piedmont property, whose 9 hectares of vines lie in the hills outside the village of Treiso. Respect for the soil and sustainable agriculture are key to their philosophy - the use of pesticides was stopped in 2012, with progressive organic conversion leading to certification in 2019. Their mission is to seek the highest quality in their wines, respecting the vintage and trying to minimise interventions in the cellar. The result is wines that have purity and clarity, not having been overwhelmed by extensive barrel ageing.
