Outstanding 2019 Brunello di Montalcino

2019 has been heralded as one of the most exciting, high quality Montalcino vintages in the last decade. It was a warm vintage, without extremes, with just the right amount of rain falling at opportune moments during the growing season – including light showers in late August and September, which advantageously delayed harvest. The long ripening period, with cool nights, has given intensely perfumed wines with ripe tannins. Richness and freshness are immaculately balanced.

“2019 was a textbook, beautiful vintage,” Caterina Carli at Il Colle told us. “There was no frost or disease, nor heat spikes during the summer. And then September was glorious. We could take our time for the harvest, and the bunches were sweet and rich in flavour, whilst still having good acidity. The alcohol levels are also not excessive – 14% in my case. This is our first vintage with organic certification. Working this way in 2019 was easy, and a joy. I wish for more vintages like this!”
